Noise pollution causes unnecessary stress and tension every day, but if you think your neighborhood is bad, you’ve never been to Kent, England. Kent is home to what the locals call “the world’s loudest manhole,” where the residents from up to half a mile away can hear cars driving over it.
Noise Pollution From Cars
According to these residents, when cars drive over the manhole, it sounds as if a shotgun is going off. This is in part because the manhole is actually broken. The road it is on was resurfaced in July, and residents were eager to drive on the busy road again.
When they were finally allowed to drive on the street again, they were shocked to find the broken manhole cover and reported it immediately. According to the news article published in the Inquisitr, all complaints made to the Kent County Council about the noise pollution have proven fruitless, as nothing has been done to fix it.
Sound Reduction Technology
The Kent County Council sent a highway inspector to examine the manhole, but upon examination, it could not be determined the purpose of the manhole cover or who it belonged to. It could be used for the water board, electric, or someone else entirely.
The cover has no markings on it, which makes it difficult to determine who it belongs to, and impossible to see at night, when drivers frequently drive over it and wake up the entire neighborhood.
Without the proper sound reduction technology, the noise pollution will continue until it is discovered who the manhole belongs to. Until then, the manhole will remain “the world’s loudest manhole.”
Now you can add noisy manholes as another reason why sound reduction technology is so important!
